Supervisor Harvey Milk Assassinated In 1978

In 1977, Harvey Milk defied all odds and became the first gay to hold office on the Board of Supervisors in San Francisco, California. Milk was openly gay, believed that a gay person could indeed live an honest life, and succeed. He was proof that if wanted something bad enough, you could win and succeed. Unfortunately for Milk, his term was short lived when an anti-gay supervisor David White became deranged over leaving his seat on the board and asked Mayor George Mosconte to allow him to return and was denied.

On November 27, 1978, White shot and killed Mayor Moscone and shot Harvey White two times in the head. White admitted the murders and was given five years in prison with parole. The defense blamed “junk food” for the mental breakdown of White’s depression that was pre-existing. No one that had any feelings about being pro-gay was allowed on the jury.

Harvey Milk is an inspiration to all of the gay community even in death. He showed the world that a gay person could be elected to office. He showed the world that he was just another political man with a different way of living. He showed the world that you could succeed if you want it bad enough. He died for his sexual orientation. The mayor died for refusing to allow an anti-gay mentally depressed man back on the board.
