Key State Facts On Defense Of Marriage Act
Massachusetts and California are the only two states that issue marriage licenses for same sex marriages.
Rhode Island is the only place where same sex marriages in other states is recognized and honored.
New Hampshire, New Jersey, Vermont and Connecticut allow civil unions and allow same sex spousal right on a state level.
Oregon and California provide nearly all spousal rights on a state level to unmarried couples or domestic partnerships.
Washington, District of Columbia, Maine and Hawaii provide some spousal rights on a state level for unmarried couples or domestic partnerships.
The timeline regarding same sex marriages starts back in 1996 with the Defense of Marriage Act, which has barred federal recognition of any same sex marriage and allows states to do the same. Tomorrow I will provide this timeline for everyone to see how we came to the point we are at now.
Many states, over half of the states have a defining language that recognizes only a man and a woman as a married couple. Unfortunately, these laws also affect straight domestic partners in most cases. Not only do people ban same sex marriages, but they also ban domestic partnerships.
The only state that was not successful with defining the marriage law was Arizona in 2006.
President Bush supports the proposals of any state that wants to amend the marriage law to prohibit any same sex marriages or to recognize any same sex marriages.
Do we really want another four years with someone like Bush in office?

“Not only do people ban sane sex marriages, but they also ban domestic partnerships.” I could make a joke about SANE sex marriages, but I figured I just point out the typo instead…but there could be some really good jokes about that… hehe!
I had no idea that that many states had any spousal rights. It’s a start, I guess. I had a dream 2 years ago about a friend of mine and her partner. I hadn’t seen them (in the dream) for a long time. It was an olympic like setting (could be 2016 games here in Chicago or it could be the gay games…) and I asked her about the ring on her finger. I was confused because I didn’t know if the law had changed. She said no, it’s just symbolic.
I hope we don’t have to wait until 2016 for my gay/lesbian friends to be able to marry.

Well isn’t that just sweet. Sane sex marriages.
And I would love to hear your sane sex joke. I for one have never had a sane sex marriage.
Yikes, to many S words together.
Thanks
And you thought I was promoting same sex marriages didn’t you! Hehe
Heck most of us didn’t want the last 4 years of Bush in office - but unfortunately too many of those who get to vote didn’t make the right decision!
